The County of Maui Office of the Mayor will hold a free, in-person grant writing workshop on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, from 2 to 4:30 p.m. at the Kahului Service Center, Room 105, 110 ‘Ala‘ihi St., Kahului.
This workshop is open to County grantees, nonprofits and all residents seeking to identify additional funding streams and improve the quality of their grant submissions to governments, nonprofits or other institutions that offer grants – not necessarily County grants. Space is limited. To register, please email Emily Bartow at Emily.E.Bartow@co.maui.hi.us.
Grants are funds given by governments, nonprofits or institutions to individuals or organizations for specific projects or purposes, typically without needing to be repaid. They usually require an application and accountability for how the money is used.
The June 24 class will focus on general best practices for writing strong proposals and will help participants identify potential funders for local projects. Please come with a project in mind — this will be an interactive session designed to help organizations shape their funding strategies in real time.
The workshop will be led by the County Office of the Mayor Chief of Staff Cynthia Lallo and Budget Director Lesley Milner, along with other key County grants staff.
Lallo, Chief of Staff to Mayor Richard T. Bissen, Jr., has more than 25 years of experience in strategic planning, fundraising and nonprofit development. Formerly President of CLC Consulting Group, she has helped secure millions in philanthropic support by aligning funder priorities with community needs.
Milner was appointed Budget Director in June 2024. She previously served as a Budget Specialist in the Office of the Mayor and as a Senior Committee Analyst in the Maui County Office of Council Services. Before joining the County, she worked in grants management in research administration at Portland State University and with the International Association of Chiefs of Police in Virginia.
“This workshop is part of our continued effort to strengthen community capacity and support Maui Nui’s nonprofits,” said Mayor Bissen. “By improving access to funding and enhancing grant writing skills, we are investing in the long-term success of our community organizations.”
