What kind of volunteers does NHLC need?

Lawyers licensed to practice in Hawai‘i and paralegals will be the most needed to assist with community outreach and education, intake, clinics, and representation on cases. Substantive experience with insurance, disaster relief, probate, trusts and estates, family law, real property, environmental law, and Native Hawaiian law is most needed.

Experienced volunteers who can commit to regular, weekly service over at least the next 2 months will also be needed to help with: project management, communications, docketing, records management, and administrative support.

Trauma informed practice experience and experience serving indigenous communities preferred.

Do I have to be a lawyer or paralegal to volunteer?

No, experienced volunteers who can commit to regular, weekly service over at least the next 2 months will also be needed to help with: project management, communications, docketing, records management, and administrative support.

In support of the families on Maui, Native Hawaiian Legal Corporation will be focused on longstanding kuleana to the lāhui, helping families to protect land, homesteads, and cultural rights. For families that suffered home damage or loss, it is critically important that they have access to disaster relief.  Numerous requirements, however, will pose barriers and make our Native Hawaiian community acutely vulnerable to land loss. NHLC will serve as many families as conflicts and capacity will possibly allow to ensure they have the legal support required to avoid that outcome.  NHLC will also continue its longstanding programs through this disaster assisting Native Hawaiian cultural practitioners with the legal support needed to protect traditional and customary practices, including sacred site protection, burial protection, and advocacy for water rights and other rights to protect the environment. NHLC will need help, because they expect that the need will overwhelm our staff resources. If you would like to volunteer to help, please complete the form below and they will be in touch as soon as they're able about next steps. Experience with insurance law, FEMA, and probate are particularly helpful.
