When catastrophic wildfires forced Maui residents from their longtime homes and into an unknown future in early August, Maui United Way’s small yet mighty local staff immediately transitioned to around-the-clock disaster response, leveraging our 75 years of community service on Maui.
Here are some results so far:
Emergency Financial Assistance for Adults in the Impacted Fire Zones: Maui United Way launched a one-time $1,000 financial assistance payment program for adult fire survivors living in the impacted fire zones in Lahaina and Kula, limited to $5,000 per household, as long as funds allow. Giving families the ability to choose what they purchase is empowering – they know what they need.
Maui United Way has approved 18 grants to nonprofit partners offering direct relief to impacted families including:
- Locally grown food provided by Maui’s farmers
- Transportation for those who have had their vehicles destroyed
- Mortgage and insurance assistance
- Help replacing identification lost in the fires
- Crisis counseling
- Childcare services and health care, including from Native Hawaiian practitioners
As the community moves beyond initial emergency response, MUW will engage with the community to ensure our work takes a survivor-centered approach that creates a stronger, more resilient Maui.

Once you have fiilled out the form, an HHFDC representative will contact you to confirm your information and your participation. Due to the large influx of homeowner support requests, it may take us a few days to get back to you. We ask for your patience as we are working hard to process hundreds of applicants we have received. Once we have spoken with you and your information has been verified, we will release the information on our website’s list of available housing inventory.
Governor Josh Green, M.D. and the Hawaiʻi Housing Finance and Development Corporation (HHFDC) have launched the Hawaiʻi Fire Relief Housing Program. The goal of the program is to connect those in urgent need of housing due to the Maui fires, with Hawaiʻi homeowners willing to assist by offering unoccupied rooms, units or houses on a temporary basis. “We are asking folks in the community to rent out those extra rooms, the ‘ohana units or accessory dwelling units (ADUs) in their homes, vacation rentals, or whatever safe and secure rooms they have available,” Governor Green said.
Further details about the HHFDC Hawaiʻi Fire Relief Housing Program can be found in the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) section here: HHFDC-Fire-Relief-Housing-FAQ.
HHFDC thanks the Hawai‘i Association of REALTORS® for making its Standard Form Rental Agreement available to property owners and landlords free of cost through a license agreement with HHFDC. Use of the Standard Form Rental Agreement by property owners and landlords is subject to the Standard Form Rental Agreement End User License Agreement.
In coordination with Lieutenant Governor Sylvia Luke and the Office of Hawaiian Affairs (OHA), the Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement (CNHA) has opened the Maui Relief Storage Facility, a coordinated donation management center to receive, sort and inventory donations collected for Maui residents impacted by the wildfires and store them until they are ready to be transported and received on Maui as feasible and appropriate.
Located in Hakuone at Kaka‘ako Makai, the Maui Relief Storage Facility is currently set-up to receive donations from coordinated relief efforts/drives across O‘ahu. Businesses, community organizations, churches, schools, etc. who are collecting and receiving large donations should call (808) 341-0622 to coordinate delivery. Once received at the facility, the donations will be sorted, inventoried, and stored until ready to be received on Maui and then transported as feasible and appropriate.
Unfortunately, the center is not able to accept drop-off donations at this time. Individuals wanting to donate much needed goods and supplies are encouraged to find a donation drive for Maui fire relief in their area.

Maui Economic Opportunity, Inc.'s Maui Fires Relief Transitional Housing Program continues to place individuals and families displaced by the wildfires – but has an urgent need for available rental units for six months.
With more applications in hand than can be funded, the program has suspended taking in new applications. However, placements continue and more than $600,000 in rental payments have been obligated so far.
The lack of available units has hindered the program, which pays for six months of rent and security deposit. Lease agreements are signed between the landlord and tenant with MEO paying the landlord directly.
Landlords or property managers with available units who would like to assist those displaced by the wildfires can initiate the process by sending a draft lease and photos of the unit to maui.fires@meoinc.org.
Since August 15, All Hands and Hearts (AHaH) has supported volunteer coordination with the Hawaii Volunteer Organizations Active in Disaster (Hawaii VOAD), matching volunteers with established organizations on Maui. All Hands and Hearts first provided remote support, coordinating volunteers for local organizations – ensuring vital housing and resources were available for evacuees and internally displaced persons in the aftermath of the wildfires. Due to the dedicated efforts of their Disaster Assistance Response Team (DART) and volunteer coordination team, All Hands and Hearts has become one of the lead resources for volunteer coordination and engagement on Maui. We are continually expanding our scope beyond Hawaii VOAD’s initial ask and showing that volunteer-powered disaster work can work alongside government entities. With a proven track record of successful volunteer coordination, we are building long-term relationships with council members across Maui County and have connected 304 volunteers with various collaboratives, hubs and partners around the island.
Our team has been working closely with the Napili Noho Community Hub, which supports over 100 families a day and aims to provide long-term support for the communities recovering from the wildfires over the next two years. Thus far, over 280 people have volunteered their time at this hub alone, helping sort and distribute supplies, running the markets and providing general support for the community.
In addition to the Napili Noho Community Hub, DART has connected with other Maui County hubs to review various scopes of work including reforestation, green waste removal and distribution, and is working to support the long term sustainability of these hubs. By facilitating and coordinating volunteers, AHAH is able to support these hubs that are essential to the local communities.
Please fill out this form if you're interested in being paired with an organization to volunteer, and are already in Hawaii.

The Hawaii Rangeland Stewardship Foundation's mission is to perpetuate sound stewardship of Hawaii's rangelands through advocacy and education.
Fueled by hurricane winds and drought conditions, catastrophic wildfires began on multiple islands in Hawaiʻi on August 8, 2023. The fires rapidly gained intensity leaving communities devastated throughout the state. Maui Island endured multiple uncontrolled fires leaving many homes, communities, businesses, and land devastated. Ranches and farms have also been burned. A few structures and piles of ash are what remains of historic Lāhainā town, and search and rescue efforts continue to find survivors. We humbly ask you to share this announcement and if you have the means to consider donating to the agricultural producers in Hawaiʻi whose livelihoods have been threatened and whose lives will be forever altered from these tragic events.

HELPING FAMILIES GET BACK ON THEIR FEET
In response to this devastating event, we’ve launched bootsonthegroundmaui.com and formed a non-profit organization to help rebuild our community.
Our mission is not just about reconstructing structures; it’s about restoring hope, dignity, and a sense of normalcy for all affected by the fires.
Boots On The Ground Maui is a grass roots organization focused on funding solutions by way of grants and donations to the housing crisis which has been immediately magnified by the Lahaina Fires of August 8, 2023. BOGM gives immediate free aid to those that lost homes, belongings and loved ones. No red tape, no paperwork and no delays on support.
Spearheaded by Kim & Kai McLaughlin, long time residents of Maui and their business partners Derek & Ashley Hyman – Ohana; they are committed to doing everything possible to restore this special community. With the recent tragedy of the Lahaina fires which completely destroyed historic Lahaina Town and surrounding neighborhoods, we have quickly assembled a non profit organization to better serve both the community and the donors that are contributing to aid in rebuilding.
Co-Founders Kim and Kai McLaughlin, a local Realtor specializing in sales and rentals and Kai a 10-year veteran Fire Fighter II on Rescue Company A Watch, along with Ashley and Derek Hyman, vice president of Customer Success and Derek the Founder of Scalable Growth immediately mobilized within 24 hours of the deadly fires. Generous funds and donations from within their network made it possible to meet with families and individuals as soon as the next day to help them acquire items and needed supplies to help them stabilize while coping with shock and trauma of the tragedy. Real Estate clients began opening up their homes instantly and they began placing families in free housing. Kim and Kai along with other members of their operation ran convoys of large supply amounts to West Maui daily, aiding in bringing much needed food, fuel, clothing, children’s items, water, toiletries and much more. Despite reports of looting, robbing and unsafe conditions in various areas-the team felt the need outweighed any risk involved and moved forward with their convoys of supply chains.
Introducing the "Ohana Restoration Grant" the first of its kind with the initial monies focused on supporting the Maui Fire Department (MFD) Families. Please join us in supporting the local Fire Fighters! Over the past few weeks, these brave firefighters have not only been dealing with the personal devastation of losing their homes, but they've also continued to serve our community in the recovery efforts. They've been balancing the emotional turmoil of personal loss while selflessly prioritizing the safety and well-being of others.
These funds will provide much-needed support as they navigate through this challenging time. Whether it’s used for temporary housing, rebuilding efforts, or simply to cover daily living expenses during this difficult period, these grants offer a helping hand to our brave firefighters and their families.
Our deadline for raising these funds is the 9/11 ceremony at the Kahului Fire Station. It’s a poignant time to remember the sacrifices made by firefighters everywhere and to give back to those in our local community who’ve given so much.
Please consider becoming a part of the BOGM Ohana by contributing either financial support, skilled volunteer work or both. Our members are boots on the ground daily and working tirelessly to fight for community stability on many levels which is so desperately needed. This is your chance to be a part of something truly impactful! Whether you’re a long-time resident, a newcomer to the island, or just someone who loves Maui from afar, there are plenty of ways to join us:

Maui Rapid Response is an ahupuaʻa based disaster response team made up of individuals from the Maui community and a number of nonprofit and direct-aid organizations. Founded in 2020 in response to the Covid-19 shut down, Maui Rapid Response is a decentralized citizen collective driven entirely by community values and needs, with a commitment to prioritizing support for native Hawaiians and vulnerable members of our local community. All funds raised in our Maui Mutual Aid Fund and any other fundraising efforts are administered by nonprofit fiscal sponsor Grants Central Station, a 501(c)(3) organization.
When the wildfires devastated Maui we expanded our mission to include broadly supporting the Upcountry community. This means that we provide direct and indirect aide to those affected by the wildfires - those displaced by the Upcountry fires, those Upcountry helping to house survivors of any of the wildfires, those Upcountry who lost jobs due to the fires, etc. We do this through supplying items such as food, personal hygiene supplies, and water, so that these households can concentrate on the important things. We also provide support to other groups who are doing the work. And through our partnership with Maui Food Bank, we are now also able to utilize resources to immediately address emergency food situations.
Our response to the multiple fires on Maui is ever changing. For up-to-date information on volunteer opportunities, donation requests, and how to request help, please go to our UpCountry Strong Facebook Page or our Instagram at @upcountrystrong

The fund is to support the Native Hawaiian population facing challenges such as the Maui wildfire disaster that uprooted 271 Kānaka homeowners from their ancestral lands in Lāhainā. The fund rallies to provide the necessary financial aid and expertise required to secure insurance claims and disaster assistance. The fund will ensure our kānaka community remains rooted in their homeland, protecting our people’s place within the rich tapestry of Hawaiʻi’s cultural heritage.
Under the Kānaka Anti-Displacement Fund, HCL ʻOhana Advocates will collaborate with homeowners to:
Phase 1 - Leialiʻi Homestead Preservation: In this phase, the Fund centers its efforts on preserving the stewardship and connection to ʻāina (land) for the 102 ʻohana within the Leialiʻi homestead on Maui. HCL helped the Leialiʻi ʻohana get their mortgages to secure their place on the land in 2007 and 15 years later, HCL will be here to make sure they stay on the land.
Phase 2 - Expanding the Reach: Following the successful implementation of Phase 1, the Fund will extend to the remaining 169 kānaka homeowners who have been similarly impacted by disasters, with the intention of offering them the same level of support and resources.
• Aims to raise $5 million in phase 1 for deferred payment loans.
• Average homeowner loan: $50,000 at 5% interest, repaid from insurance claim monies or other loans.
• Investors provide grants or loans to HCL at 2% interest, with up to 10% forgivable for defaulted loans.
• Additional $1.5 million for 5-year operational costs.
HCL launched the fund September 1, 2023 with $150,000 of its own monies for this fund to be used for deferred payment loans to impacted homeowners.

The goal of the Kānaka Anti-Displacement Fund is to prevent displacement of indigenous kānaka maoli from Maui and other areas in Hawaiʻi impacted by natural and human made disasters.
The Maui wildfire disaster temporarily displaced 271 kānaka (Native Hawaiian) homeowners from their land in Lahaina. Our people will need financial support and expertise to secure insurance claim monies and disaster assistance necessary to stay in place and rebuild. Unfortunately, kānaka may not have the funds to afford the costs of submitting a claim in the first place or to appeal insurance and FEMA denials. Without access to support and expertise, our people will be displaced from their homelands and potentially, from Hawaiʻi altogether.
The Fund has been established by Hawaiʻi Community Lending (HCL), a US Treasury certified native CDFI, to provide deferred payment loans and technical assistance for impacted kānaka
